This is an incredible paddling adventure to one of the most unique and rich biological areas in the world. It is the Great Bear Rainforest. This forest stretches from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to Alaska and contains 25% of the remaining intact temperate rainforest in the world. Join Tantalus Adventures as we paddle, hike, wildlife view and learn about the cultural heritage of the Git Gaat people of Hartley Bay. Our sea kayaking trips run in the month of September, offering the best of the Great Bear. A special time of the year is the fall when we will have the opportunity to watch the miracle of "the B.C. salmon run."In late August and September salmon have entered the rivers to spawn, while Black bears have begun to make their way to the rivers. This is opportunity to search for the magical Spirit Bear. This is the only area in the world where this bear is found. Humpback whales are numerous in the waterways and our chances are excellent to view these magnificent, powerful creatures. The trip includes a visit to meet Hermann and Janey, two passionate whale researchers. We will spend time listening to whale calls and learning about Humpback and Killer Whale biology at their unique home and lab on Gil Island.

This area has been the home of the Tsimshian people for hundreds of years. We commence our trip in the Git Gaat Village of Hartley Bay where we will be taken on a tour of the village to learn the cultural history and the Git Gaat's present way of life. Our first night will be spent in the village where we will be treated to a traditional dinner with close friends. Depending on the itinerary we may have the opportunity to sleep in a Native Longhouse located in the back of a stunning fiord. Majestic Eagles will be our constant companions as we paddle our way through protected waterways and around islands and secluded inlets. Our accommodations will be in newly constructed cabins, which have been built by the Git Gaat people in culturally sensitive and naturally rich traditional areas.

This is a beautiful trip in a beautiful land. You will explore, adventure and connect to the spirit of the land and people in a world-class environment. You will leave a busy life behind and reconnect your soul with nature. Most importantly you will have fun. We look forward to seeing you as our trip begins in Prince Rupert.
